Activities of Mosquito Control Districts
The following are some examples of activities performed by mosquito control districts and can be of importance in the assessment and management of mosquito-borne disease risks:
Collection and identification of mosquitoes and reporting of new species identified in an area to the WDOH and local health officials. Map and monitor mosquito Breeding sites Minimize mosquito breeding sites Monitor mosquito populations and disease Utilize Best Management Practices* for treatment. Follow up monitoring to measure the effectiveness and impact of treatments Education and stewardship
West Nile Virus The Camano Island Mosquito Control Districts participates in the Washington State Department of Health West Nile Virus surveillance program.
*The Camano Island Mosquito Control District utilizes an Integrated Pest Management strategy in which we determine the best control methods to abate mosquitoes and breeding areas. This may include habitat alterations, environmentally safe larvicide, and it may be that no control measures are needed. Spraying Adulticides is not a practical option in mosquito control unless a particular mosquito pool has been determined to have a positive West Nile Virus test result. Adult control is only short term and adults will return as soon as new larvae and pupae mature.
